The Beattitudes, Matthew 5:1-12

L02 Share and report DB:

Definition for blessed: To be blessed means to be fortunate in our lives in ways of receiving blessings from the Lord which leads to our general state of happiness and well-being. As an example I have felt immensly blessed in my life through gifts from the Lord, such as a happy family, an ability to learn new things, good health and because of other specific miracles that have occurred throughout my life.

Beattitudes:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth,
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy
Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God
Blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called the children of God
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner, of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

3 Beattitudes:
Blessed are they that do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled

This promise is very powerful because its relating to those people who have desires for righteousness. Because many times we want to do whats right which creates this desire within us, and we keep trying and trying to do better each day. I believe that this means (as stated in the student manual) that those with desire to be righteous will be blessed to be spiritually satisfied. Meaning that those who want to learn more about the gospel and are striving to understand gospel principles so that they can do better will be blessed with this knowledge and feel fulfilled in their attempts at righteous living.

Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy

Those who are kind hearted to others and exercise mercy will in turn receive mercy. This is a very comforting statement and also encourages us to treat others the way we would want to be treated. This makes sense because all of the people around us are children of our Heavenly father and therefore he rejoices in their happiness and pains in their sorrow. And so we must recognize that these people have infinite worth and treat them the way we would if they were the Savior. Because if we decline to demonstrate mercy then its according to the rules of justice that we would be treated the way we acted towards them.

Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God,

To be peacemakers is an important attribute because it is showing that we want there to be peace and happiness. Because contention comes from the adversary, and we mustn't give into the temptations to be contentious. To be at peace with someone and to want peace is an act of love and comes from God. In my family I know that the most wonderful experiences we have are when we are diligently striving to get along and therefore have general well feelings in the home. The blessing that directly correlates with this beatitude is that we shall be called the children of God. This makes sense because to become like our Heavenly father we will show love and kindness to others, and therefore if we are striving to have peace in the home, with friends or at school then we are accurately showing that we are following the Savior.

  1. How did you and what did you do to complete the assignment?
    1. This assignment I chose to also use a blog to answer the questions about defining "blessed" and then reading about the be-attitudes, and pondering about the different meanings of them, and then reading in the student manual to have a further in depth understanding of each principle.
  2. Why did you decide to do the assignment you did?
    1. I did this assignment because I love being able to share what I have learned with those who want to know, and I believe that the be-attitudes are very special because it talks about the blessings we can receive for the righteous actions we do. Also because my mom posted the be-attitudes up on our wall at home and therefore I like learning more about them.
  3. What do you think is the best thing about your assignment and how do you think it could be improved?
    1. What I really licked about this assignment was that in the student manual I was able to learn other in depth meanings of phrases I had read many times before but didn't know their full implications. What I could have done better was to do further research and read some talks about the specific principles I chose.
